I can't believe we are into November already! As we look ahead to this month, I want to share a few dates with you. First, the Square 1 art order is due on November 18. Here is a blurb from Mrs. Anderson: SQUARE 1 ART Fundraiser Our students have once again completed fabulous artwork that will be available for purchase on a variety of items through the Square 1 Art fundraiser. All students have received order packets this week. A few of the items available include keychains, cookie dishes, pillowcases, and porcelain ornaments; all with your child's very own artwork on them! Ordered items will arrive before the holidays, and make perfect gifts. Visit square1art.com for more details, or feel free to email me with questions.
Order Due Date: 11/18/19
This year raised funds will go towards some special supplies for our upcoming district-wide student ArtPrize entry 20/20 Vision!
Please help find and send in donations of wooden boards to Park!! We need 1X4 and 2x4 untreated primed or unprimed boards for us to get started on our 20/20 project (hopefully soon)!! All students at Park will be creating art of their own unique eyes on a 6-inch length board. All help is greatly appreciated!
Second, our school food drive runs until November 19. Please send any donated items in with your child to school.
Also, Thanksgiving break starts on Wednesday, November 27 and ends on Sunday, December 1.
I am looking forward to seeing all of you at conferences! It will be a great time to sit down and chat about your child. During conferences, we will be having a Scholastic book fair in our library. It is a great time to purchase books for your child as Christmas presents or just because :) . I will also put out a book order form after Thanksgiving break too.
I wanted to let you know that a mom of a former student of mine is going to be joining us during our reading time to do some observation work for school. She is currently in school to be a teacher and needs to complete some hours in the area of reading. She is super nice and will make a great addition to help us during our reading block. She will be in the classroom daily from now until the middle of December or so. Her name is Mrs. V.
In reading we are continuing to do some important work on being word detectives. We are focusing on looking at the beginnings of words, word endings, and vowel teams in the middle of words (ea, ee, oa, ou, ai, oo). This week we will look at using parts of words to help us with other words, and looking at compound words and contractions.
In phonics we are doing similar work with contractions and compound words. We have also done some work on looking at digraphs (ch, wh, th, ect.) and blends (br, gr, st, etc.). We talked about sticky word parts, which is really blends with three letters (str, scr, spl, etc.).
In math our focus has been on addition word problems and subtraction word problems. We have been learning these two types of problems separately, but next week we will begin mixing up the problems. I am teaching the kids to picture the word problems. This will help them to understand what the word problem is asking them to do. We are learning different strategies to help us solve the word problems, with kids leaning towards circle drawings or number sentences. Our next test won't be for another week or so and the plan right now is to not start our next unit until after Thanksgiving break.
For social studies, we are talking about being thankful and thinking about things that we are thankful for. This will lead us into our unit on economics where we will study things like needs/wants, goods/services, and producers/consumers.
Enjoy some pictures of the class over the last few weeks. These pictures include the football game, Halloween party, game day, and some phonics work. So I am having trouble uploading pictures. I will try again this week sometime - so sorry!
