We had a GREAT time on Friday! The kids really enjoyed "flashlight Friday" and did very well with it. We even had a disco party just after recess :) It was one of the highlights of my day. When the kids got settled in in the morning and I turned out the lights, you could have heard a pin drop it was so quiet. The kids read for quite awhile uisng their flashlights and blankets to make it fun and cozy. At the end of the day they even got to use their flashlights with their reading buddies. Thank you for helping to make this a fun day by allowing your child to bring a flashlight to school. I did notice a few flashlights left behind so I will make sure that they get home to you on Monday.
In math, we spent the week slowing down a bit and doing some review. Next week we will begin our next unit as well as really pushing math facts of addition and subtraction. It would be great if you would practice your child's math facts of addition and subtraction within 10 and then withing 20. The ice-cream math quizzes will happen a bit more regulary and they will see how important knowing their math facts are. Their homework this week is to finish a coloring by math fact page that they took home yesterday. They had a chance to work on it in class and will need to finish it up at home.
In reading we are going to be focusing on non-fiction. We will be talking about how to look at, read and process non-fiction. We will spend the next month or so on this unit. I will be encouraging the kids to spend lots of time reading non-fiction text, but I will also encourage them to continue to read fiction as well.
In writing we wrapped up our opinion letters this week and will begin next week learning how to write How To's. The kids will get to teach the reader how to do something that they are experts in. This unit is not graded or on the report card. It's a really great unit to continue to teach kids about details and order of writing. We will continue to practice our grammer skills too.
In Social Studies we will be studying geography. We will be talking about land and water as well as spending some time talking about Michigan's upper and lower penninsula's.
Just a few reminders. You can still send in returnables on Monday to help raise money for our 5th graders for camp. Also, students have half a day this coming Friday.
We have scheduled our Field Trip for Thursday, May 25 to John Ball Zoo. Please mark that date on your calendars! We do not have a limit for how many parent volunteers can come :)
I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend and travel safely where ever you go!
