I hope that you were all able to get outside a bit on Saturday before the rainy day on Sunday!
I am looking forward to meeting with all of you this coming week at conferences. It is always a nice opportunity to sit down and talk about the progress of your child and to give me the chance to get to know all of you even more. Please come with any questions you may have.
This week we have our buy one get one free bookfair. A flyer went home last week with some details pertaining to this sale. One of the things to note is that if they run out of a book on a shelf, they may not be able to reorder it. If this happens with your child, I will have them pick out another book in its place unless I hear different from you. The book fair will be open during conferences on both Monday (14th) and Wednesday (16th) from 5:00 - 7:30. Our class will do some window shopping tomorrow at 3:00. The kids will fill out a wish form and take those home tomorrow. If you choose to let your child pick out books, we will have our shopping day on Wednesday at 2:30. You can send the money in, along with a list of what books they may buy, on either Tuesday or Wednesday. Or of course, you may shop at the book fair yourselves on Monday or Wednesday night.
Tomorrow we will be having a mystery reader come to our classroom. State Representative Daniella Garcia will be visiting Park Elementary tomorrow and we are going to welcome her into our classroom to read a story to us. I plan on telling the kids tomorrow morning :)
Now to an update on our learning. In reading we just wrapped up our last unit of study and started our next unit of study, which is reading across genres. In this unit we will learn about different genres and read books with the same topics over multiple genres. So, for example, we will be reading a variety of books across different genres on weather. We will read a fiction book, a non-fiction book, and some poetry on weather. We will be learning about weather after spring break so this will be a good way to introduce some information and vocabulary on weather. We will cover some other topics as well. As we spend time reading across genres we will do some comparing and contrasting.
In writing we wrapped up our small moment stories and the kids spent some time fixing and fancying up one of their stories. I will share these great stories with you at conferences :) This coming week I am going to have the kids write one more small moment story for me. I will use this story to show them their growth since the beginning of the year. I love sharing with the kids how far they have come as writers! After this, we will begin our next unit in writing which will be poetry.
In math we will start our next unit which will cover graphing and comparing information in graphs. This is such a fun unit to teach and the kids really enjoy it as well.
You may have heard that we were the box top winners! We will be having our ice-cream sundae celebration later this week :) The kids are very much looking forward to it, and so am I ;)
Last, I have taken quite a few pictures in the last couple weeks so I thought I would put them in a slide show format. The pictures include kids at recess, kids putting cubes together for an activity in math, our pj day to kick off March is Reading Month, our writers celebration (here the kids went around and read their stories to each other in groups of two), and the kids working on their posters. Enjoy! Due to some difficulties, I apologize for some of the pictures being sideways...
