I'm not sure what happened to all of our warm weather, but I wish it would come back to stay! This week looks to be a bit chilly so please make sure that kids are bringing coats or sweatshirts for outdoor recess.
We have lots of things happening in the classroom. One of the big exciting moments was presenting our Slide Show on weather to Mr. Field on Monday. He loved it and was very impressed with the work they did! I too am very impressed with the kids and thought they did a fabulous job. They not only researched information and created a slide to show their information, but they spoke very well in front of the class and Mr. Field as they presented their findings. Please check out the class slideshow under the student project tab at the top of this page.
Another really exciting thing happening in the classroom is the arrival of our caterpillars. The kids are amazed at how fast the caterpillars are growing and changing. We are observing the caterpillars and anxiously awaiting for them to make their chrysalis. Ask your child what changes they have seen so far and what things they see inside the cups the caterpillars are housed in.
Also, the kids have gotten to play Ukulele's in music class. I was able to listen to them and they are pretty good!
At this point in the school year, the school library is closed for checking out books. All library books need to be returned to school by the end of next week. As soon as your child is finished with their library books, please have them return the books to me. Thanks!
I sent home a Scholastic book order form today. This will be the last one for the year. Those will be due on May 20.
Math - In math, we are just starting our last unit for the year. This unit will cover double digit addition including carrying numbers or what we will also call in class "making a new ten." I will show the kids multiple strategies for solving double digit addition. I will do my best to show you these different ways so that you can understand what your child is doing on their homework. Please let me know if you have any questions. Some of the strategies I show the kids is a starting point for them to understand carrying over and we will move to quicker ways to solve these problems.
Reading - In reading we are tying in our science unit on animals and our writing unit on non-fiction writing. We are reading many non-fiction books - mostly on animals and we just finished weather books - and having conversations about these as they relate to our science units and writing unit. I am also taking time to work on our reading strategies and our comprehension as we move up levels in reading.
Writing - In writing we will be finishing up our last unit this week. We have been working on our All About Books and will write our final one to be graded. After this, I will return to Small Moment writing with students to work on adding in details, transitioning words, spelling, penmanship, and mechanics.
