This week the kids really settled into routines. We are well under way in first grade!
In reading we continue to focus on how we can grow as readers by making goals for ourselves during independent reading. How many books can I read during this time? Then the kids evaluate how they did with their goal and make adjustments if they need to. We also discussed how readers make a movie in their mind as they read a book. We practiced being "directors" while we were reading.
In writing the kids are well underway into their first small moment story. This week we really worked on thinking about our whole story and planning out our pages. We use our fingers to plan what goes on each page. Then we discussed how on the first page we need to include the who, where, and what of our story.
In math we continued to learn about number partners. We talked about and learned the partners of numbers 2 - 8. There was a homework sheet that went home this weekend. Again, homework is not due till the end of the week. It is simply so you can see what your child is learning in math. Please help your child with their homework if they need it :)
This week we will begin going to the library to check out books. The kids will be able to check out 2 books. One of these books will be a just right book for them so they can practice their independent reading at home. The other book can either be a just right book or a book that you could read with them at home. We will be going to the library on Mondays and Thursdays.
A HUGE thank you to Mrs. Stankus for being able to donate some great bean bag chairs to our classroom. The kids are really enjoying them :) I have a rotation so the kids will be able to sit in them during their reading and writing time every six days.
