We had another great week at school. We have begun to settle into our routines a bit more and have really tried to stick to and follow our daily schedule. This is allowing the kids to really develop and build their stamina in the areas of independent reading and writing as well as getting the feel for the different parts of our day.
In writing we are also building our stamina and discussing what it looks and sounds like when we are writing independently. Our writing focus will be on Small Moment Stories - stories about something that happened to us. We will write our stories with a beginning, middle, and end using good details to expand our story.
In math we are going to be talking about the term "partners" in numbers. This is when two numbers work together to make a new number. So a partner of 5 would be 3+2 or 1+4 or 2+3 or 4+1.
In social studies we are going to continue to build on our knowledge of our school wide theme - Better Together. We will be doing some team building activities to practice this. We will also talk about friendship and what makes a good friend.
A quick note about homework. Homework will begin getting sent home this week Friday. This will typically be a math page to be completed at home and sent back to school anytime the following week. I don't check off that it has been turned in, but I do look over the homework that has been turned in to see if there is anything I need to follow up on with a student. This homework is designed to give students extra practice at home as well as giving you an opportunity to see what your child is doing in math at school. Please feel free to help your child with his/her homework and if you see them struggle with a concept or set of problems, you can give them some more problems to continue to practice with. I know that our math curriculum looks different than what you and I learned in school, so if you have any questions, please feel free to let me know. I will try to give an example problem so you can see how it is done, but I know that I will not always be able to anticipate what questions may arise.
Last, I am super excited to see all of you who are able to participate in our first Color the Park! The event is at 6pm, but come at 5 where there will be food available for purchase. There will also be raffle prizes and an auction.
I hope you all have a great week!
