If you haven't heard the exciting news yet, please ask your child about the caterpillars!
Last week we had a couple special activities planned and the kids really enjoyed them. First, the kids had a tea party in art after having studied tea ceremonies and different ways cultures drink tea. I was able to help out in the art room during this tea party and it really was fun to be a part of. The kids were able to try out different teas and snacks as well as see different tea pots and cups. They used their proper manners and were so helpful to each other. Thank you to all who were able to bring in supplies for this!
Giraffe's have long necks so that they can reach the leaves at the tops of trees. This helps them to find food that other animals can't reach. If you had a giraffes neck, you wouldn't need a ladder to go apple picking!
Then the kids will find a picture to go along with their animal. We are turning this into another slideshow, which you can view on our blog under the student project section.
For our second project the kids got to create their own animal and give it a name. For this project the kids needed to spend some time thinking about what habitat they wanted to use and then decided what type of animal would live in that habitat. They also had to decide what their animal eats (meat eaters need sharp teeth, but plant eaters don't, etc.), what body covering their animal will have, and what special features their animal may have. The kids started their thinking, planning, and sketching last week. Today I gave them large construction paper so they could begin making their posters. They know they have to do nice, neat work and include many details. They will present their posters to the class sometime at the end of this week or next week, depending on when we finish and then the posters will come home with them.
Tomorrow we will be taking our last unit math test, which covers double digit addition. Then, we will be taking our final assessment which covers everything we learned this year. The last couple of weeks will be spent reviewing math skills that show up on that last assessment as needing more practice.
In reading we are continuing to tie in our science as well as practicing our reading strategies we have learned throughout first grade. We are giving it our best effort and pushing hard to continue to build on our reading.
In writing we have been reviewing small moment writing - especially hitting on adding in details to our stories. We are also concentrating on our handwriting and spelling. Some of our writing time this week will be spent doing our animal posters.
Enjoy the week!
