We are really building our stamina in both reading and writing. In reading, we have been talking about making a movie in our minds while we read. By doing this, we are able to stay connected to the story and see when we are confused by any parts. This coming week we will be comparing and contrasting books that we have read.
In writing, we are nearing the end of our first unit. Last week we talked about how we can add details into our stories to make them interesting. This week we will concentrate on writing good, solid endings to our stories as well as adding in dialogue. This will be the last week we work on these stories before we fix and fancy them up.
On Friday we had a visitor in our classroom. Her name is Miss Hill and she is a teaching student at Central. She will be coming in on some Fridays to observe our classroom and help out. I used to go to church with her and she is such a great girl! The kids enjoyed getting to know her :) We also did some apple printing to go along with our unit on apples and Johnny Appleseed as well as some apple math activities.
Park Color Run is this Friday, October 6! I'm looking forward to seeing many of you there!
October 10 at 9:00 am - Parent Club meeting in our teachers lounge
October 13 - Early Release Day for students
Also, this week we are doing a can drive to help raise money for our fifth graders to attend camp. The winning class from K-4 and the winning 5th grade class will do a fun activity together. The way we win is by raising the most money for the fifth graders so bring in those cans! Pssst - this will get you out of returning those cans ;) Any and all returnable cans or bottles are excepted.
Lastly, we are excited that the Hudsonville Fire Department will be coming to our school this week Wednesday afternoon for our first graders. They will review fire safety with the kids as well as talking about how important it is to have an escape plan. Now is the perfect time to establish an escape plan with your family; including a meeting spot when you exit the house. It is also a good time to review your address and phone number with your child. This is something that is included on the report card, however I won't test for this until later in the year. The kids will get to see a fire truck, see the fire equipment, and go through the smoke house. We will have a fun little "fire" snack afterwards. If you have any questions, please let me know.
I hope you have a great week!
