In reading we are continuing our discussions on non-fiction text. We didn't get very far last week so this week we are going to spend a lot of time on focusing on what our books are mostly about and what we can learn about that topic. We will also begin looking at text features such as headings, captions, maps, labels, pictures, etc.
In writing we are spending some time writing a How To together as a class. We learned that How To's need to be written in order with good detailed steps. Later this week, the kids will start writing their own How To's about a topic they know a lot about.
In math we are learning strategies to help solve problems such as 15 - 7 = ? We learned the quickest way is to start at 7 and count up to 15. We are also continuing to work on our math facts to 20. I told the kids some great ways to practice their math facts are to play addition war (deal a deck of cards like you would to play war. Then you each flip two cards over and either add or subtract the cards depending on which skill you are practicing. The person with the higher answer is the winner.) You could hide some sticky notes around the house with math facts on it and have your child find all of them and then answer the math fact. They can try to beat their time. You could play uno and whatever number card the kids put down they could answer that many flashcards. If your kids to get out and moving, you could take chalk and draw a hopscotch in the garage or on the driveway and put math facts in them. These are just a few suggestions to make learning math facts at home fun :)
In social studies we are continuing our discussions on geography. This week we will finish up our geography booklets and talk about and study maps.
Lastly, I will be out on Friday and Mrs. Coeling will be in subbing for me. I have already told the kids :) My nephew is graduating from Navy bootcamp in Chicago on Friday morning so we will be heading out there to see this and to spend time with him before he ships out. I am so proud of him!
I hope everyone has a great week!
