Our first week back was great! The kids really got back into the swing of things pretty quickly and have adjusted well to the few changes I made to our schedule. These weren't major changes, just a switch to our intervention time so our first grade team as a whole could utilize our support a little differently.
We are continuing on with our math unit on place value. We talked this week about two digit numbers being made up of tens and ones (73 is 7 tens and 3 ones). We also talked about adding doubles (3+3=6). These are facts that you can be practicing with your child at home. We also learned strategies for double plus/minus one and double plus/minus 2.
This past week we started new units in both reading and writing. In reading we have begun to talk about non-fiction books and the kids are really excited to start digging deeper into these books. In writing we have begun our How To books. Here we get to think about what we are experts in and write a story to teach others How To do something such as riding a bike, planting a garden, making cookies, etc.
Next week in Social Studies we will begin our unit on Geography. This unit will include looking at maps, talking about how the earth is made up of land and water, and learning that Michigan is made up of the lower peninsula and the upper peninsula.
We finished the week up with a video I shared with the kids. I really wished you could have all been there to hear our conversation - to hear your kids share their thoughts. The video is about how someone showed kindness everyday and didn't expect anything in return. What he did get in return was what we hope for all our kids - happiness and love. Here is the link to the video if you would like to watch it.
