On Saturday Summer had her first homecoming dance - where did the time go!?!
Last week we took our first math unit test. Overall the kids did great! We will start our new math unit this week. This unit will cover the relationship between addition and subtraction and will teach kids strategies for both.
In reading we will continue to learn reading strategies to help us read and understand what is happening in the story. This past week we talked about how we need to pay attention to what we are reading and to the pictures to make sure that we are understanding the book. We also worked at comparing and contrasting the books that we read as well as retelling our stories. If we forget a part of the story, we need to go back and reread the story.
In writing we worked on adding in details to our stories to make them more interesting. We also learned and practiced how to add dialogue, (words that our characters said out loud), to our stories. The kids really seemed to have fun with this! Next week we will be discussing how to reread our stories to look for details to add in or take out as well as how to edit our writing.
On Friday morning the Hudsonville Fire Department will be visiting our first grade classes. We will have an opportunity to learn about fire safety, see the fireman's gear, to look at a fire truck, and to participate in the smoke house. This is always a highlight of our first graders and it is an important thing for the kids to learn. One of the things the firemen/firewomen teach us is that we need to know our address and phone numbers. This is something that is also on our report cards and is a good time to teach these to your child if you haven't already. We will also be making a fun fire snack in the classroom on Friday morning too.
A reminder that we are still collecting plastic containers at school for your child to decorate. These containers will be used to collect money for Project Calvin. A note went home about this a week or so ago, but you can find the details here on this blog too.
Because there was some confusion in Turkey Trot forms for our class, you can still turn them in tomorrow :)
If you haven't turned your conference slip in yet, please do so asap because we will be scheduling conferences on Friday.
Last, a reminder that students have an early release day on Friday.
Have a great week!
